It is through the input of sound in real time that the visual landscape is generated, and then aesthetically managed towards various visual expressions. If there is no sound, there is no visual expression.

There are no pre-rendered video files in this artwork.

Realtime sound analysis drives the visual language in a balance of visual expression and true visualization of the sonic journey. Synchronized with these pulses are lighting events that further materialize the effects. There are times where the introduction of regular tones (pulses) are registered in the quad sound array as circling around the room. Through multichannel video and lighting arrays we carefully place expressions of sound in these additional dimensions. Ritual / System is an artwork that presents sound not only as an acoustic phenomenon, but also as a visually relatable expression as well as a physical (spatial) experience. Little regular micro pauses, then longer pauses begin to feel rhythmical, and patterns of pauses become recognizable rhythms. Introducing small, regular units of silence or space between the continuous tones is the genesis of rhythm. Without space what we have are continuous period tones, or drone music. Music is ultimately the relationship of these frequencies (everything is, like EVERYTHING is this….) and when two frequencies combine we sometimes hear additional frequencies, psycho-acoustic effects emerge.īut without space, without breaks in the tones we have no perceptible rhythm.

This artwork explores the establishment of, the building of vibrations from a single bang slowly speeding up to what is ultimately perceived as a tone - a wave with cycles per second so fast that we don't hear them as individual pulses but rather as a note. Ritual / System is a research-performance artwork experienced as a continuum.Įverything is vibrations, and sound is measured in vibrations per second.
